He also encouraged teachers to build trust among their students to ensure that the students would be discerning and receptive to new knowledge and ideas.

“Educators should not force their students to listen to them as this would only lead to disagreement and disappointment. It will also hamper natural interests among the students towards education.
“We must work together to become teachers whom students want to learn from rather than teachers whom students have to listen to,” said Dennis when officiating at the Baram Education Office Excellence Service Awards held at Eastwood Valley Gold and Country Club here yesterday.
Dennis urged educators to think of themselves as coach or person-in- charge of a football team.
“As coach, you do not just tell your players how to play correctly but teach them the right techniques. Likewise, as an educator, we must keep on monitoring and coaching our students and not neglecting our main role or duty which is to bring the best out of our team,” he said.
He emphasised the essence of coaching is to enable someone to walk through a challenge, understand the situation and act on it.
“Similarly, educators have to enable their students to walk through their studies, understand and find solution or answer to subjects that have been taught and act on it,” he said.
“It is vital for students to understand the whole scenario of subjects being imparted to them. This helps to ensure that during examinations, they would be able to work their mind to answer questions posed to them.”
Dennis also encouraged educators to help motivate their students to do their best in their studies.
“By sharing a clear teaching and learning agenda to students, educators would be able to boost students’ interest in education and helps towards achieving success in line with the set goals for their studies. Students would also have stronger passion and desire to learn.
“Also, students will learn better by looking at what they see. Observational learning or learning through watching others, in this case the teachers, will help students to retain information and replicate the behaviours that were observe,” he added.
At the event, a total of 135 teachers from various primary and secondary schools throughout Baram constituency received their excellence service award from Baram Education Office.
Dennis commended the recipients and urged them to continue to be consistent in providing excellent and quality service to the people they serve, especially their students.
He also reminded them not to get too involved in politics and put greater emphasis on their core responsibility which is to teach their students and make sure they become knowledgeable persons.
Also present at the ceremony were Baram Education deputy officer Jalong Wan and Baram Headmasters Council chairman Samuel Iwat.
