MCC prioritises safety in ongoing project
MIRI: Members of the public, particularly motorists, here have expressed their concern about the safety aspects regarding the city’s ongoing centralised wastewater management system project.
According to complaints received by Miri City Council ( MCC), the works on major roads across the city centre result in temporarily traffic diversions at several locations, causing traffic congestions.
It is known that the affected roads are under the council’s jurisdiction.
In response, MCC assured the public that by to the project carried out with the state Sewerage Services Department has safety as its key priority.
It also reiterated that the wastewater management system project for this city followed the success in Kuching.
“This system will ensure sustainable development with proper public health and sanitation services.
“This is one of the state government’s efforts to transform Miri city into a preferred and sustainable resort city,” said MCC in a statement yesterday.

connector sewers concentrated on the densely- populated Miri Central Business District.
This part of the project package kicked off on March 30 this year and is expected to reach completion by March 29, 2021.
It is also learnt that the current works on the main truck sewer cover Jalan Sylvia, Jalan Kipas, Jalan Bulan Sabit through Pujut Roundabout, Miri Bypass and a part of Pan Borneo Highway.
Works on the major lateral sewers will involve Jalan Marina Utama, Jalan Merbau, Jalan Parry, Jalan Bintang and Jalan Sehati.
It can be seen that temporary traffic management procedures have been put in place, such as those to indicate road diversions, to allow for smooth implementation of the works.
“We have taken all possible precautionary measures to safeguard the safety of the road users.
“The public is also advised to exercise caution, adhering to speed limits and temporary traffic diversions at these locations.
“Most importantly, those not directly involved in the works are strictly warned against entering any of the work sites at all times,” said MCC, adding that for safety, construction of the trunk and major lateral sewers is incorporating ‘ trenchless’ method.
It added: “The temporary inconvenience is inevitable, but necessary to ensure timely and successful completion for a better future of Miri city.”
