Willie describes win as the people’s victory
KUCHING: Willie Mongin, the parti Keadilan Rakyat ( PKR) candidate who won the Puncak Borneo seat in the May 9 polls describes his victory as the people’s victory.
“This is not about me winning, but the people winning ( the people tsunami) it with the hope that the country will have a good governance, free from corruption and able to prosper,” he said at a tallying centre in SMK Siburan Wednesday evening.
He promised to do his level best to serve the constituents, and provide the area basic amenities like treated water supply.
Willie won the seat in a threecornered fight against Jeannoth Sinel from Barisan Nasional ( BN) and Buln Ribos of State Reform Party ( Star).
He won by a 4,005-vote majority by securing 18,865 votes, against Jeannoth who obtained 14,860 votes, and Buln’s 795 votes.
Willie, who hails from Kpg Bratan along Jalan Borneo Height said his struggle in the area started about 10 years ago, having also contested in the 2016 state election in Mambong, which is among state seats under Puncak Borneo.
In the three- cornered fight, he lost to Datuk Dr Jerip Susil with 3,333-vote majority after he secured 2,645 votes against Dr Jerip who polled 6,161 votes.
The just concluded May 9 general election was the second attempt for Willie in Puncak Borneo, having contested in the last general election against the incumbent Datuk Seri James Dawos Mamit and Dripin Sakoi from Star, and lost by 9,721-vote majority.
Willie said his victory could not have happened without the hard work of the people, who were all volunteers, and the people’s prayers.
