KUCHING: About 250 members of Persatuan Taekwondo Negeri Sarawak ( WTF) have undergone their colour and senior belt upgrading sessions recently.

The upgrading sessions were held in several locations including at SJK North Miri, SMK Merbau Miri and Main Gym at Jalan Pantai, Miri, which was conducted by the national senior examiner of Taekwondo Malaysia (WTF) Tan Check Joon.

Similar sessions were also held in Sibu and Sarikei, which was conducted by examiner Shirley Wong and Thomas Tang respectively.

Persatuan Taekwondo Negeri Sarawak ( PTNS) is the pioneer member affiliated to Taekwondo Malaysia ( WTF) and therefore its members are eligible to participate in Sukan Malaysia (Sukma), SEA Games, Asian Games and Olympic Games.

Tan, who is also PTNS technical chairman, said he was pleased with the increasing number of students taking up Taekwondo ( WTF) as their favourite pastime.

“Since the schools in Malaysia encouraged 1 Student 1 Sport programme many years ago, taekwondo ( WTF) sport is fast growing in popularity. Another reason is that taekwondo is a sport for all races,” he said.

He said in Sarawak, PTNS has more than 5,000 members actively involved in the activities under World Taekwondo ( WT) system, with some as young as five years old.

“T h e y c ome f r om a l l communities and that is one strong factor that helps unite the people of Sarawak,” he added.
