NEW YORK: The United States ( US)- Asean Business Council (USABC) has joined other US entities in congratulating the people of Malaysia on the appointment of Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad as the country’s seventh Prime Minister.

President and chief executive officer, Alexander Feldman said that he looked forward to continuing the close cooperation with the new Malaysian government.

“The free, fair and peaceful nature of the electoral process serves as a testament to the will of the Malaysian people and the strength of the nation’s democratic process. The members of the USABC look forward to continuing our long history of business, trade and investment with Malaysia, a leader in Asean and one of the world’s top trading nations in energy, commodities, and electronics,” he told Bernama.

Pakatan Harapan claimed victory in the 14th General Election by winning 121 out of the 222 parliamentary seats.

USABC, a business advocacy group representing the interests of US corporations in the Asean region, has a membership of more than 150 companies with a combined global revenue of over US$6 trillion and employing more than 13 million people.

Feldman said the council hoped to continue the tradition of working with the Malaysian government to expand mutually beneficial bilateral economic relations between both countries in ways which would also support Malaysia in achieving its Vision 2020 goal of becoming a high-income nation. Many USABC corporate members have established manufacturing or business operations in Malaysia.

USABC members include the largest US companies conducting business in the Asean region, ranging from those that have been around for over 100 years and newcomers. The council has offices in Washington DC, New York, Bangkok, Hanoi, Jakarta, Kuala Lumpur, Manila, and Singapore. — Bernama
