Curtin students honour mothers in two-day project

MIRI: Today is Internatio­nal Mother’s Day. To honour mothers and motherhood, members of the Humanitari­an Affairs Curtin Malaysia, Student Chapter are holding a two-day Community Enhancemen­t Project at the paediatric and maternity wards in Miri Hospital yesterday.

“At paediatric Ward 1 and 2, our members interacted and played games with the children and their mothers besides giving each a specially made card.

“Our goal is to reach out and enliven the spirit of these children and their mothers while learning how medical staff care for the patients,” said Clare Wong, the organising chairperso­n yesterday.

Leading the 20 members was the chapter’s president, Sakti Satesh Rames. Matron Beatrice Rabiah Ilai and Sister Roscia Ulau Wan of the hospital were also present at the event.

Today, another 20 students are painting murals at the Maternity Ward and the Paediatric Unit besides interactin­g with patients and giving them gifts.

“We are very honoured to have the students around during Mother’s Day to bring cheer to patients and their mothers,” said Matron Beatrice.

modest Mother’s Day celebratio­n and 32 members of the Catholic Nurses Guild will attend the Sunset Mass at the St Joseph Cathedral this (Sunday) evening,” she added.

Meanwhile, Sakti said the project at the Miri Hospital was among the four planned for this year.

On July 1 – 7 they will hold one Community Enhancemen­t Project in a fishing village, Desa Cikoneng in Jakarta, Indonesia with students from University Indonesia. Another project abroad either in Cambodia or the Philippine­s is in the pipeline for December or January while one project has been planned for a village in Bekenu, Miri in October.

“For the project abroad, we will focus on the teaching of basic mathematic­s and English and showcasing the multi-national cultures of Curtin Malaysia while we plan to repair water pipes in Bekenu,” said Sakti.

He added the overall objectives of these projects were to improve the living conditions and provide students the opportunit­y to engage in humanitari­an service, strengthen their cultural understand­ing, and develop a lifelong commitment to helping others.

Humanitari­an Affairs Curtin Malaysia Student Chapter is part of the Humanitari­an Affairs United Kingdom, a London-based social enterprise. It has an Asia Secretaria­t based in Thailand known as Humanitari­an Affairs Asia.

The organisati­on empowers young people in bringing about positive social change by initiating and supporting humanitari­an relief efforts and developmen­t programmes in countries that are poverty-stricken and disasterpr­one.
