“Our initial investigation found that Wong was crossing the road and was hit by a pickup truck driven by a 39-year- old man, who was heading from the town to Bukit Penyau Road,” he said, adding the incident happened around 7.50am.

Stanley said Wong died at the scene and his body was sent to Sibu Hospital for a post-mortem.

It is learnt that Wong, who was staying at Lane 1E of Wong King Huo Road, used to go to town daily for his morning coffee and would meet friends at a coffee shop.

His daughter-in-law said a family member would usually send him there by car, but that he would walk to the shop if no one was free.

She said family members had all left the house before Wong had woken up, which was why he headed to the shop on foot on his own.

Police have classified the incident under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.
