I’m aware that you may have limited budget. I hope I can help a bit with it to keep this competition going in the future. If it’s within my means, I will contribute.

KUCHING: Yang di- Pertua Negeri Tun Pehin Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud has pledged his personal contribution to keep the state-level Youth Forum Competition going for many more years to come.

“I’m aware that you may have limited budget. I hope I can help a bit with it to keep this competition going in the future. If it’s within my means, I will contribute,” he said when closing this year’s competition at Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka ( DBP) in Petra Jaya here yesterday.

Taib said he wanted to see the non-Malay communities such as the Iban, Bidayuh, Orang Ulu and Chinese in Sarawak master the national language.

He opined that it would be good for the unity of society if every ethnic group made an effort to promote and develop Bahasa Malaysia ( BM).

He was delighted to note that some non- Malays in the state had shown improvement in their command of BM.

“I hope this will go on so that our country will truly be united through our national language. I am also glad that the standard of BM among our school children has improved through this forum competition,” he said.

Taib watched the performance of finalist SMK Agama Sheikh Haji Othman Abdul Wahab, Kuching before presenting prizes to winners.

Earlier, DBP director- general Datuk Abdul Adzis Abas said the aim of the competition was to encourage the usage of BM among school students besides enhancing public speaking skills among the young generation with the view of producing capable leaders with competent communication skills.

“I want to congratulate the 13 schools that represented the various divisions in Sarawak in this Youth Forum Competition 2018.

“Their performances in terms of usage of language and presentation are excellent and impressive,” he said.

Abdul Adzis pointed out that every Malaysian ought to uphold racial harmony by practising positive attitude towards one another.
