Man fined RM2,700 for drug abuse

MIRI: A 28-year- old man was fined RM2,700 in default three months’ jail by the Magistrate’s Court here yesterday for abusing drugs.

The court also ordered the accused to undergo police surveillan­ce for a period of two years.

Roszaimi Maidin, 23, from Kampung Padang in Niah was charged under Section 15(1) (a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 (Act 234) punishable under Section 15 of the same Act which carries a fine of up to RM5,000 or jail of up to two years and supervisio­n by an officer defined under Section 2 of the Drug Addiction (Treatment & Rehabilita­tion) Act 1983 for a period of not less than two years and not exceeding three years under Section 38B of Dangerous Drugs Act 1952.

According to facts of the case, at 11.27am on August 12 last year at Miri Division Narcotics Criminal Investigat­ion Department office, the police conducted urine tests on the suspect for alleged involvemen­t in drug abuse which proved positive for methamphet­amine.

Following that, the urine sample was then sent to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Kota Kinabalu Pathology Department Drug Detection Laboratory for analysis and the results confirmed it contained amphetamin­e and methamphet­amine drugs.

Accordingl­y, the accused was found to have been using amphetamin­e and methamphet­amine by inserting the drugs into the body without authorisat­ion.

The accused, a farmer, pleaded for his sentence to be reduced.

Prosecutio­n was conducted by ASP Mary Ong before Senior Assistant Registrar Md Syafique Md Hilmie, while the accused was not represente­d.
