Street Art Festival gives better insight into Sibu

-

SIBU: The Sibu Street Art Festival 2018 showcases artworks that depicted the town’s culture, lifestyle, delicacies and festivals to visitors, according to its organising committee chairperson Wong Hie Ping.

“Twenty local artists were invited for the mural paintings. All their paintings are about Sibu – its lifestyle, food, culture and festivals,” she said at the closing of the festival themed ‘Homely Sibu - Heartland of Borneo’ on Sunday night.

The festival at the Chuang Corridor here began on May 5.

Wong said some of the artists are professionals, others were students as well as those keen to paint to explore their potential in artworks.

The festival had also comprised creative bazaar and night ly workshops.

“We had different workshops every night to teach people through DIY (do-it-yourself) on different kinds of artworks,” she recalled.

There was also a retro cinema, showing classic movies.

“In fact, we would like to invite more (performances) such as street dance and hip-hop for the street art festival. Hopefully, next year, we will have more on this.”

Meanwhile, Wong said street art festival was first organised by Sibu Municipal Council (SMC) last year.

SMC is the only council that organises such street art festival thus far, noted Wong.

“Last year, after we received overwhelming response from the public, we decided to organise the event again this year,” she said.

At the closing ceremony, the top three most favourite murals were also announced.

Topping the list was Sibu Delicacies (Anna Ho Ming Na and Sylvia Kong), followed by Under one Roof/’Satu Kopitiam’ (Jenny Ling Yung Gin) and Homely Taste/ ‘Rasa Kampung’ (Ting Hua Hu and Tang Siu Hui).

Also present at the closing ceremony were SMC deputy chairperson Rogayah Jamain, councillors Ibrahim Laili, Zaiton Abdul Kader, Albert Tiang and Joseph Chieng.
