Unimas students hold campaign against sexual harassment

KUCHING: Third Year students of Communicat ion Studies Programme, Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities, Universiti Malaysia Sarawak ( Unimas) successful­ly organised a Sexual Harassment, No Joke! campaign last Saturday at Plaza Merdeka Shopping Mall Kuching.

The campaign slogan ‘Know Your Line” was to spread awareness on sexual harassment among the public.

“There are four main agenda featured through the Sexual Harassment, No Joke! campaign namely to deliver informatio­n to the public especially the youth and how to deal with it, to create awareness on sexual harassment, to study the effectiven­ess of the campaign and to promote Unimas among the public,” said Mohammad Akhmal, the programme director.

The campaign was held from April 12 to May 12 at several locations namely Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Pending, Sarawak Matriculat­ion College, Unimas and Plaza Merdeka Shopping Mall.

Among the activities carried out during the campaign were induction talk by Margeret Bedus, President of the Sarawak Women for Women Society ( SWWS), informatio­nal booth, mini games, class attacks in Unimas, distributi­on of leaflets with explanatio­n to the public, Public Service Announceme­nt (PSA) for Sexual Harassment, No Joke! and self-defence flash mob.

According t o J ama l i Bujang Sanawi, Co- ordinator of Communicat ion Studies Programme, the aim of the campaign was not only for the course’s assessment, but also as a platform for students to experience the nature of work.

He expressed appreciati­on for the cooperatio­n given by the management team of Plaza Merdeka Shopping Mall in the efforts towards creating awareness on sexual harassment among the public.

“The campaign has received good response from Unimas students, academicia­ns and the public which indirectly can be a stepping stone to increase the awareness of sexual harassment issue,” Jamali said during closing ceremony.

The Sexual Harassment, No Joke! campaign is sponsored by the Ministry of Industrial and Entreprene­ur Developmen­t Sarawak (MIED), Shorefield Sdn Bhd, Yayasan Sarawak, and Plaza Merdeka Shopping Mall.

Also present at the closing ceremony was the advisor of Sexual Harassment, No Joke! campaign, Khadijah Mohamad Tuah and Marketing manager ( Event and Communicat­ion) of Plaza Merdeka Shopping Mal l Leovell Sam Avenido.
