Chow Kon Yeow sworn in as fifth CM of Penang

GEORGE TOWN: Penang DAP chairman Chow Kon Yeow was yesterday sworn in as the fifth Chief Minister of Penang.

Chow, 60, who is also the Padang Kota assemblyma­n, took his oath of office before Yang Dipertua Negeri Tun Abdul Rahman Abbas at 11.10am at Seri Mutiara here.

Present at the ceremony was Abdul Rahman’s wife Toh Puan Majimor Shariff.

Also present were Chow’s wife Tan Lean Kee, former Penang chief minister, who is also Finance Minister, Lim Guan Eng and wife Betty Chew Gek Cheng as well as state Pakatan Harapan ( PH) leaders.

Chow, who is also Tanjong MP, was appointed as the new Penang Chief Minister after the PH, comprising DAP, PKR, Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (PPBM) and Parti Amanah Negara (Amanah) won 11 parliament­ary and 37 state seats in Penang in the 14th General Election (GE14), on May 9.

DAP and PKR managed to retain the 19 and 14 state seats, respective­ly, which they won in the 13th general election while PPBM won in Teluk Bahang and Bertam, and Amanah in Permatang Pasir and Bayan Lepas.

The Barisan Nasional ( BN) only won two state seats, namely Sungai Dua and Permatang Berangan while PAS secured one state seat namely Penaga.

In the GE14, Chow won the Padang Kota state seat with a majority of 7,808 votes defeating BN candidate H’ng Khoon Leng and Goh Saik Wei of Parti Bersama Malaysia.

For the Tanjong parliament­ary seat, Chow who is also former state Local Government, Traffic Management and Flood Mitigation Committee chairman defeated BN candidate Ng Siew Lai with a majority of 29,599 votes. — Bernama
