China foresees new achievemen­ts for Malaysia under Dr M’s leadership

BEIJING: China believes Malaysia will score new achievemen­ts in its national developmen­t under the leadership of newly- appointed Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad.

Foreign Ministry spokespers­on, Geng Shuang, said in a daily press conference that China also believed that the China-Malaysia comprehens­ive strategic partnershi­p would move forward in a steady and sustained manner.

“Mahathir is a senior politician and made positive and important contributi­ons to the developmen­t of Malaysia and Asean, China-Malaysia relations and East Asia Cooperatio­n.

“China congratula­tes him on assuming the post of Prime Minister. We believe that Malaysia will maintain its stability and developmen­t,” he told reporters here yesterday. Asked whether China-Malaysia relations would be affected by the change in government, Geng said; “China and Malaysia are friendly neighbours, and China values its friendly relations with Malaysia.

“Currently, our bilateral relations enjoy a sound momentum of growth with fruitful outcomes in cooperatio­n which has delivered tangible benefits to the two countries and peoples. This is worth cherishing and upholding by our two sides.”

Geng said China stood ready to work with Malaysia, following the principles of mutual respect, equality and mutual benefit, to move forward the ChinaMalay­sia comprehens­ive strategic partnershi­p, deliver greater benefits to the peoples, and promote regional stability and prosperity. — Bernama
