Abim calls for new government’s stand on Palestinian issue

-

KUALALUMPUR: TheMalaysian Islamic Youth Movement (Abim) hascalleduponthenewgovernment to express Malaysia’s stand on the Palestinian issue following the United States’ declaration of Jerusalem as Israel’s capital and the relocation of the US embassy on Monday to Jerusalem.

Abim president Mohamad Raimi Ab Rahim said Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad’s firmness in championing the Palestinian issue would be heeded and supported by the international community.

Dr Mahathir was sworn in as the seventh Prime Minister of Malaysia last Thursday.

He was the fourth Prime Minister from 1981 to 2003.

Mohamad Raimi said in a statement yesterday: “The US and Israeli actions are seen as a manifestation of many episodes or ‘catastrophes’ over the last 70 years when thousands of Palestinians were tortured.

What’s even more despicable is the killing of Palestinians during what was dubbed as the ‘ Great Return March’ in the Gaza Strip recently, when they returned to their homes and land to prepare for Ramadan.” (The Great Return March is a fresh approach to Palestinian resistance against Israel’s seven decades of occupation and also to reaffirm their right of return to their homeland.)

“To date, 58 Palestinians have been killed in the Gaza Strip and this figure will definitely rise ahead of Ramadan,” Mohamad Raimi said, calling on the world community to continue to increase diplomatic pressure on both the United States and Israel.

He said the United Nations should also suspend the membership of the two countries as well as impose upon them military and economic sanctions.

He also said that Abim, with the Global Peace Mission ( GPM) Malaysia, launched the Palestinian Humanitarian Aid Fund to provide medical aid to Palestinians who were injured in recent days as a result of the Zionist cruelty.

Abim has set a target of RM500,000 for medicines and medical aid.

An initial amount of RM20,000 would be handed over to GPM for this purpose, he said.

Mohamad Raimi said those wishing to donate could send their contributions to the GPM accounts at Bank Islam Malaysia Berhad (14- 023- 01- 002922- 4), Affin Islamic Bank Berhad (1051- 9000-2871) or Maybank Islamic Berhad ( 56422161-1602).
