Dayaks urged to stay united despite differing political inclinations

-

MIRI: The Dayak community in the state should continue to stay united while respecting each other’s political idiosyncrasies.

Assistant Minister of Local Government Datu Dr Penguang Manggil said the 14th general election ( GE14) has already concluded and it is now the time for the Dayak community to work as a team.

“I know we may have different political affiliation but let us set it aside tonight.

“We must stay united and look forward to achieve greater success for the Dayak in Sarawak,” he said when officiating the Sarakup Indu Dayak Sarawak (SIDS) Miri branch pre- Gawai gathering at a hotel here recently.

Dr Penguang, who is also Marudi assemblyman, assured his commitment to serve the rural folk in his constituency.

He said that in terms of politic experience, he was still young in the field and welcomed constructive inputs from the people in his constituency on how to transform the development landscape of Marudi areas into vibrant areas.

“As long as I’m your representative, I will continue to work with my people by giving inclusive services because that is my principle.”

Commenting on the good wishes from the people who are hoping that he will be a full minister one day, he said the wishes could only be achieved with the people’s support.

“I cannot do that alone nor can anybody else.

“This will depend on your wisdom by choosing the right people to lead you especially our own Dayak people.”

Touching on SIDS, he commended the non-governmental organisation ( NGO) for its success in serving as a proactive platform to uplift Dayak women’s participation in mainstream development agenda.

“Being an NGO, SIDS should continue to play significant role in disseminating correct and accurate information on government policies, programme and development projects to the rural masses.

“At the same time, you can also advise people like us in the government.”

He wanted SIDS continue to promote and enhance the Dayak’s beautiful and unique cultures and tradition.

He said the handmade handicrafts made by the Dayak community was a precious asset that should be preserved by the community.

At the function, he presented a government grant worth RM20,000 under his minor rural project ( MRP) allocation to SIDS.

Among those present at the function were Dr Penguang’s wife Datin Monica Ukong Jaya, chairperson of SIDS Miri branch Angela Bugak and organising chairlady Loretta Dungkong.
