SIBU: The Sessions Court here yesterday sentenced a former bookstore accountant to a total of 80 years in jail after she pleaded guilty to 20 charges of criminal breach of trust ( CBT) totalling over RM86,000.

Teo Fong Kui, 45, of Teku Road was sentenced to four years’ jail for each of the 20 charges.

Judge Caroline Bee Majanil ordered the sentences to run concurrently.

The court was earlier told that at about 9am on Jan 20 last year, a bookstore manager and company treasurer went to a bank to review the company’s bank account balance.

They discovered that there were several withdrawals made without the permission or consent of the bookstore using cheques and cash over the counter.

An internal investigation revealed 103 cheques were used between January 2016 and February last year.

The total loss was RM962,730.40.

Teo and a colleague still at large were believed to have used the money from the bookstore’s bank account for personal benefit.

Apolice investigationfound that a total of nine transactions involving RM42,084.75 and 11 transactions amounting to RM44,778 involved misappropriation.

In mitigation, Teo, who was unrepresented, pleaded for leniency saying she is a single mother with four children aged eight to 17.

She claimed to be a victim of an Internet love scam and that she had to support her aged parents.
