DGCC among top eight nominees for most improved golf course award

KUCHING: The Damai Golf and Country Club ( DGCC) was among the top eight nominees in ‘ most improved golf course’ category at the Malaysia Golf Awards 2018 which was held at Acapella Suite Hotel in Kuala Lumpur on May 11.

According to its general manager Roslan Mohd Salleh, DGCC was the only golf club from Sarawak to be nominated for the award.

“To be nominated as one of the top eight clubs in the country is already an achievemen­t for us,” he said on another milestone for DGCC which is one of the 200 golf clubs in the country.

The winner in the category was Sultan Abdul Aziz Shah Golf and Country Club while DGCC faced sti ff competitio­n from other nominees including Amverton Cove Golf & Island Resort, Awana Genting Highlands Golf & Country Resort, Gunung Raya Golf Resort, Impian Golf & Country Club, IOI Palm Villa Golf & Country Resort, Penang Golf Club and Seri Selangor Golf Club.

“We are very keen to attract more internatio­nal golf events to be held at DGCC because of our continuous efforts in promoting Sarawak as a popular sports tourism destinatio­n in the region and the recognitio­n given recently by the Malaysia Golf Awards will give boost to the club’s image and reputation,” said Roslan.

“By having more internatio­nal golf tournament­s, all of our existing facilities will gradually be improved and the quality of our services to customers will also be upgraded to deliver the best golfing experience for everyone,” he added.

“I would like to extend my gratitude to the Sarawak Economic Developmen­t Corporatio­n (SEDC) and DGCC Board members for their continuous support to all the transforma­tion plans for DGCC which has been carried out in stages since 2016,” said Roslan.

The awards presentat ion ceremony was also attended by SEDC deputy general manager Edwin Abit.

The Malaysia Gol f Awards was organised by ParGol f in collaborat­ion with Malaysian Golf Associatio­n ( MGA) and it is the country’s only industry-wide awards recognisin­g deserving individual­s, gol f clubs and companies for their achievemen­ts and contributi­ons in the previous year.

There are 14 categories and the winners were selected based on voting by a 50- strong panel comprising MGA committee members, ParGol f editorial personnel and selected gol f industry personalit­ies.

DGCC wi l l be hosting the inaugural Sarawak Internatio­nal Team Amateur Golf ( SWAG) in July, the Perodua World Amateur Golf Tournament in August and the PGM- MNRB Internatio­nal Golf Tournament in September this year.

In addition, many local golfers and from other states a re expected to throng DGCC for the Grand Charity Golf Tournament – which will be held for the first time at the club after the fasting month – and also the SEDC Sarawak Chairman Cup, the annual Arnold Palmer Memorial Classic, DGCC Inter-Team Golf Tournament, Sarawak Inter- Club Golf Tournament, Sabah-Sarawak SGA Cup and Damai Masters Golf Tournament.
