Police nab suspected shooter 2 hours after receiving report

KAPIT: The police here arrested a man, said to have shot his employer, two hours after receiving a report on the case.

Kapit police chief DSP Freddy Bian said his men apprehende­d the 34-year- old suspect at a house in Taman Ixora at Jalan Selirik here around 3.30am yesterday.

“We also found a shotgun and an empty pellet case at the house, which we confiscate­d to aid investigat­ion,” he said.

It is said that around 1.30am, the employer was on his way to send a worker back to the longhouse at Sungai Sesibau when he was stopped by the suspect, whom he recognised as also being one of his workers, at the junction

“He stopped his vehicle and went out to talk to his worker. It was then that the conversati­on escalated into a misunderst­anding, where the suspect returned to his vehicle and re- emerged with a shotgun, which he used to shoot his employer,” said Freddy.

The employer sustained injuries on his right shoulder and right ear from the shot, but he managed to drive straight to Kapit Hospital.

“Doctors have removed the pellets from the victim’s wounds and he is now in stable condition,” added Freddy.

The suspect is now in police custody to facilitate investigat­ion under Section 307 of the Penal Code for attempted murder, and Section 8 of Firearms ( Increased Penalties) Act 1971 for unlawful possession of firearms.

If convicted for attempted murder, the suspect could face imprisonme­nt up to 20 years, while conviction under Section 8 of Firearms ( Increased Penalties) Act 1971 provides jail sentence of up to 14 years and six strokes of the ‘ rotan’.
