Punjabi proud of Gobind being first Sikh minister in Malaysia

MIRI: The Punjabi community here shares the joy of Gobind Singh Deo – son of the late politician and lawyer Karpal Singh – who made history by becoming the first Sikh minister in Malaysia.

“It is good to see Gobind Singh, a member of the Punjabi community in the cabinet. It is a proud and happy occasion for our community. Other than being a recognitio­n of his abilities, it is also a recognitio­n for the long establishe­d Punjabi community in Malaysia,” said Miri Indian Associatio­n president, Councillor Karambir Singh.

Karambir also extended the Miri Indian community’s congratula­tions to all the Indians appointed to the new cabinet.

Gobind, 45, has been appointed as the Minister of Communicat­ions and Multimedia – becoming one of the two politician­s of Indian descent in the soon-tobe Pakatan Harapan (PH)’s Cabinet. M Kulasegara­n, Human Resource Minister is also from the Democratic Action Party (DAP).

The ministers will be sworn in tomorrow (Monday).

The other federal ministers are Deputy Prime Minister – Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail, who is also Minister of Women and Family Developmen­t, while Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin was appointed as the Home Minister.

The Education Minister is Dr Maszlee Malik; Minister of Rural Developmen­t – Rina Harun; Minister of Economic Affairs – Datuk Seri Mohamed Azmin Ali; Minister of Housing and Local Government – Datuk Zuraida Kamaruddin; Minister of Finance – Lim Guan Eng; Minister of Transport – Anthony Loke Siew Fook; Defence Minister – Mohamad Sabu; Minister of Agricultur­e and Agro-Based Industry – Salahuddin Ayub (Amanah) and Health Minister – Dr Dzulkefly Ahmad.
