Mohamed Elias new Election Commission secretary

PUTRAJAYA: Datuk Mohamed Elias Abu Bakar is the new secretary of the Election Commission, effective yesterday.

The EC said in a statement that he succeeds Datuk Abdul Ghani Salleh who went on mandatory retirement on May 10.

Mohamed Elias, 58, a graduate of Universiti Malaya, joined the Civil Service on July 1, 1983, and last held the post of deputy secretary- general (operations) of the Ministry of Human Resources, from Feb 15, 2017, to May 20, 2018, it said.

“The EC hopes that Mohamed Elias’ wide experience in the Civil Service would enable him to lead the EC secretaria­t in planning, coordinati­ng and implementi­ng the EC policies efficientl­y and effectivel­y,” it said. Mohamed Elias had also served as the under- secretary of the Developmen­t, Finance and Human Resource Division at the Ministry of Human Resources from April 28, 2014, to Feb 14, 2017.

The EC said Mohamed Elias had also served as the director of the Business Developmen­t Division; director of Research and Policy; and director of the Human Resource, Consumeris­m and Management Division at the Ministry of Domestic Trade, Cooperativ­es and Consumeris­m from March 24, 2008, to April 27, 2014.

The EC recorded its appreciati­on to Abdul Ghani for his contributi­on and service to the EC as its secretary from Aug 19, 2013, to May 9, 2018.
