Man gets 12 months’ jail for motorcycle headlight theft

SIBU: A man was sentenced by the Magistrate­s Court here to 12 months in jail after he pleaded guilty yesterday to stealing a motorcycle component.

Cozzy Petrus, 26, was charged under Section 379A of the Penal Code, read with Section 511 of the same code, which provides a jail term between one and seven years, and a fine.

He was arrested on May 17 after stealing a motorcycle headlight at a hotel in Pahlawan Road.

Based on the facts of the case, the motorcycle owner – a hotel worker – was informed by a friend around 4.30pm that a man was attempting to steal his motorcycle headlight.

The owner rushed out of the hotel and saw the accused holding the headlight, and immediatel­y apprehende­d him.

Police were summoned to the scene to take custody of the suspect, and seized the stolen headlight and a screwdrive­r from him.

Meanwhile, in the same court, a jobless man was sentenced to four months’ jail after he pleaded guilty to criminal intimidati­on.

Mohd Syahiran Ibrahim, 30, was charged under Section 506 of the Penal Code, read with Section 34 of the same code.

The Section provides for an imprisonme­nt term which may extend to seven years, a fine, or both.

The court was told that on May 4 at 7.40pm, Mohd Syahiran and his brother confronted a man in Sibu Jaya over a police report lodged by the man’s wife, who suspected the siblings of having broken into the couple’s house.

During the incident, Mohd Syahiran attempted to attack the man using two metal objects, but was stopped by the latter.

A police report was lodged on the same day and Mohd Syahiran was arrested on May 17 at 10.25am near Awang Ramli Amit Road.

The police also seized the two metal objects used during the incident.

In mitigation, Mohd Syahiran asked the court for a lenient sentence, saying he had to look after his grandmothe­r.
