Perlis Umno wants newly sworn-in MB Azlan Man expelled from party
KUALA LUMPUR: Perlis Umno has proposed to the Umno top leadership to expel newly swornin Perlis Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Azlan Man from the party.
Perlis Umno Liaison Committee chairman Datuk Seri Dr Shahidan Kassim said he and nine Perlis Barisan Nasional state assemblymen asked for the immediate expulsion of Azlan when they met Umno acting president Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi and Umno acting deputy president Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Tun Hussein.
“Azlan should not have accepted the appointment of menteri besar when he does not have the support of the majority of the Perlis assemblymen,” Shahidan said at a press conference here yesterday.
BN had won 10 of the 15 seats in the state legislative assembly in the general election on May 9, leaving Pakatan Harapan with three seats and PAS with two.
Shahidan, who is also Perlis BN chairman, said Perlis BN unanimously named Tambun Tulang state assemblyman Datuk Ismail Kassim for the post of menteri besar. Ismail is a younger brother of Shahidan.
As such, Shahidan said, he appealed to the Raja of Perlis, Tuanku Syed Sirajuddin Putra Jamalullail, not to intervene in the appointment of the menteri besar and asked Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad to help resolve the issue.
“Nine (of the 10) Perlis BN assemblymen reject the appointment of Azlan as the menteri besar … that’s why they did not attend the swearing-in (of the menteri besar) today,” he said.
The three Pakatan Harapan and two PAS state elected representatives as well as a Pakatan Harapan MP, Noor Amin Ahmad, attended the ceremony.
