Traders cooperate with price-tagging of goods – KPDNKK

SIBU: A total of 3,572 business premises across Sarawak which were checked between May 18 and 21 this year saw traders complying with the rules and regulation­s.

According to Ministry of Domestic Trade, Cooperativ­es and Consumeris­m ( KPDNKK) deputy director of enforcemen­t ( special operation) Datuk Iskandar Halim Sulaiman, the inspection focused on display of price tags and prices of goods among others.

“From the 3,572 business premises inspected throughout Sarawak, 96 were Ramadan bazaars. No case was acted on as traders complied in terms of price-tagging and prices. Price tags are conspicuou­sly displayed and goods are reasonably priced,” Iskandar pointed out.

He reminded traders that it is an offence under the Price Control and Anti-Profiteeri­ng Act 2011 not to display price tags.

He was speaking to reporters after inspecting the Ramadan Bazaar at Sibu Town Square Phase II on Wednesday evening.

director Mohd Nawawi Abdul Rahman, who is also state chief enforcemen­t officer, Sibu branch chief Roslee Maslie and several other enforcemen­t officers.

Iskandar said inspecting Ramadan bazaars is a nationwide exercise to ensure that food and other items are price-tagged as well as prices are reasonable.

Asked on the supply of goods for the coming Gawai Dayak celebratio­n, he said there is adequate supply with reasonable pricing.

He said enforcemen­t personnel would intensify checks in supermarke­ts, hypermarke­ts, grocery shops and others to ensure adequate supply of goods at reasonable prices in conjunctio­n with the festive season.

“If consumers who come across any excessive price hikes, please report to us so that we can promptly investigat­e into the complaint,” he advised.

Meanwhile, in a press release handed out to reporters, it stated that traders are to display price tags for their goods sold in compliance with Price Control Order ( Indication of Price by Retailer) 1993, Price Control and Anti-Profiteeri­ng Act 2011.

The penalties for errant individual traders upon conviction are a fine not exceeding RM50,000 or two years jail, or both. The offences may also be compounded not more than RM25,000.

Companies on the other hand, can be fined up RM100,000 or compounded not more than RM50,000 for the first offence.
