CHMS No. 1 students get scholarshi­ps to study in China

KUCHING: Two Form Six graduates of Chung Hua Middle School No. 1 ( CHMS No. 1) received scholarshi­ps to pursue undergradu­ate degrees at Xi’an Northwest University, China.

Kuching Chung Hua Middle School Alumni Associatio­n president Datuk Wee Kok Hui and vice president Kho Kheng Hee presented the university’s internatio­nal student offer letters to Lee Xuen and Chng Xin Yi in a simple ceremony held at the associatio­n’s office here recently.

Lee will be pursuing a bachelor degree in Human Resource Management while Chng will take up a bachelor degree in Internatio­nal Finance and Trade.

Wee revealed that two more universiti­es from China have joined their list of collaborat­ive partners to provide tertiary education to Sarawakian children mainly from Chinese independen­t schools.

“Altogether, we have seven universiti­es from China offering various higher education benefits to overseas Chinese students. The two new additions are Zhejiang University and Jiangsu University,” he told a press conference before the presentati­on ceremony.

The existing collaborat­ive partners are Beijing Tsinghua University, Shanghai East China Normal University, Guangzhou Jinan University, Fujian Huaqiao University, and Xi’an Northwest University.

Xi’an Northwest University is currently offering distance learning masters degree in Chinese Culture Media and Broadcast Studies for RMB20,000 instead of RMB60,000.

“So far, we have received 18 applicatio­ns mainly from teachers from Chinese medium schools. We want to encourage teachers and profession­als as well as eligible students to apply as well,” said Wee.

While classes will be conducted online, prospectiv­e postgradua­te students will be required to attend orientatio­n and also to submit a 30,000-word thesis, including a presentati­on, at the university in Xi’an, China.

Applicatio­n for the masters degree is now open until Aug 15. Among the important documents required include highest education certificat­ions, result transcript­s and passport. Jiangsu University has opened the applicatio­n for full undergradu­ate scholarshi­ps to study fluid mechanics from now until June 30.

“There will be 20 placements and successful candidates will receive full scholarshi­p covering tuition and fees, accommodat­ion, RMB2,000 living expenses per month and medical insurance, all of which will be borne by the Chinese government,” he said.

Lastly, Wee reminded that the associatio­n will be presenting education incentives to members’ children who have achieved excellent school and public examinatio­n results. He urged members to submit their applicatio­n before June 15.

The presentati­on ceremony is scheduled to take place at the associatio­n’s office ( behind Hock Lee Centre) on July 1 at 10am.
