SIBU: A youth was killed after he was attacked over what was said to be a misunderstanding during a drinking session here on Tuesday night.

Sibu police chief ACP Stanley Jonathan Ringgit when confirming the case, said they had classified the case under Section 302 of the Penal Code.

He said the murder was said to have occurred near midnight and within two hours, the police arrested seven suspects including three teenagers aged 15, 16 and 18.

Stanley identified the victim as Nicholas Matthew, a 25-year- old jobless man from Kanowit who was staying at Foochow Lane.

Before the incident, Nicholas was said to have gone to meet his friends at Pedada Road, where they had drinks in an unspecified location.

The police believed this was where the misunderstanding had happened when Nicholas met a group of strangers there.

The victim was alleged to have smashed a motorcycle plate belonging to one of the strangers before challenging them to look for him at his home in Foochow Lane.

Shortly after he had returned home, Nicholas allegedly hid in his friend’s house next door when he heard the group coming for him.

The victim was then pulled out of the house and the group allegedly beat him up outside his house compound where he collapsed and died at the spot.

A police report was lodged over the incident with the seven suspects remanded for seven days.

Meanwhile, Stanley yesterday reminded celebrants to refrain from excessive drinking during the coming Gawai Dayak celebration.
