EPF legal provisions to be reviewed

KULIM: The Pakatan Harapan Government will carry out a detailed study to review some of the existing legal provisions to expedite the implementation of the Employees Provident Fund ( EPF) scheme for the housewives.

Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail, who is also Women, Family and Community Development Minister, said the ministry had already convened a meeting with the top management of the EPF and Social Security Organisation ( Socso) to discuss the details on how the scheme could be implemented.

“We found that there are legal provisions that do not allow the implementation of such a scheme.

“So, we want to see how it can be implemented as soon as possible,” she told reporters after visiting the family of two who drowned in flash floods in Kampung Baru Sungai Kob here yesterday.

Wan Azizah said the implementation of the scheme for housewives should be expedited to fulfill the government’s ‘10 Promises in 100 Days’ manifesto for the 14th General Election.

She said the government would also look into suitable methods to be implemented, including a mechanism that would enable the husbands to make voluntary contributions to the scheme.

”All this effort will need the cooperation from the Finance Ministry and the Minister of Finance Lim Guan Eng,” she said.

Wan Azizah also stressed that said the two per cent EPF contribution for the housewives would come from their husbands’ existing 11 per cent contributions and that it would not be any additional deduction on the men’s salary.
