TYT: Celebratio­n of festivals highlights Sarawakian­s’ unity

KUCHING: The unity of Sarawakian­s of different faiths, cultures, and races can be clearly seen during the various festivals celebrated in the state, said Yang di-Pertua Negeri Tun Pehin Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud.

He said the people could always be seen coming together during festivals such as Gawai Dayak, Hari Raya Aidilfitri and Chinese New Year.

“Our state of Sarawak has people of different cultures and religions, but we’ve never heard of them fighting because of such difference­s, and this shows that we have been successful­ly living our own traditiona­l lives for more than 100 years,” he said in his Gawai Dayak message.

Taib said the friendship among the people of diverse races and religions strengthen­s every year.

our people that is of value. We started when we were still small and this became bigger later on when we became a bigger society,” he said.

He pointed out that the economy of the state and country is good and the people now enjoy a better standard of living.

Taib also expressed his hope for the Gawai Dayak celebratio­n to help enhance friendship, harmony and unity among the people further.
