Effective solutions needed to solve annual flash floods at Kampung Tringgus — PKR Serembu

-

KUCHING: The state government has to look seriously into the flood problems that have been hitting Kampung Tringgus in Krokong for years.

State Parti Keadilan Rakyat ( PKR) Women information chief Athina Sim said the village, which is under the Serembu state constituency, was hit by f lash flood on Wednesday night.

“I received a call from one of my party members from Kampung Tringgus about the village being hit by flash flood around 7.45pm – it is reported that flood waters reached up to at least five feet (1.5m).

“The incident affected 35 families, as per the record at 1.50am.

“The flood relief centre there officially opened at 11pm,” she said in a statement yesterday.

Sim, who is also PKR Serembu coordinator, said together with local non- governmental organisation ( NGO) Hope Place Kuching, her team rushed to the flood relief centre at Dewan Serajak Tringgus with some food supplies and also diapers to be distributed to the affected families.

“Flash floods hitting Serembu is a yearly phenomenon – the villagers have been bearing with it for donkey years. I hope that the authority concerned could help and look into ways to solve this annual flood crisis.

“As we all know, it is not only an issue about f looding, but also the suffering of the people – they have to bear and cope with the losses, as well as damage of properties,” she said, viewing that it was unfortunate that such incident had occur so close to Gawai Dayak celebration.

Sim also called upon the authorities to be the alert and on standby in providing the necessary assistance, should such situation occur again.

She also took the opportunity to express her gratitude to the Fire and Rescue Department ( Bomba) and Civil Defence Force ( APMM) for their swift action in helping those affected by the floods.

“I also wish to say a big thank you and a job well done to Hope Place founder Kelvin Wan for his help. I personally encourage this kind of cooperation as welfare transcends race, religion and political affiliations.

“This is one of the best chances for us to work together in making sure that the victims are safe, healthy and getting all the help that they need, while waiting for the situation to resume to normal,” she added.
