Activist demands police return his belongings

-

BINTULU: Local activist Voon Kuet Fui, who was detained for investigation under the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 but never charged in court, has demanded that police return his mobile phone and other belongings, which were seized from him – supposedly for investigation last year.

“It is akin to an abuse of power on the part of the police of the previous Malaysian government to not return our properties, if there isn’t any case against us found worthy of a court case.

“It has been about a year since the incident happened,” Voon told reporters yesterday.

On March 15 last year, he staged a protest in front of a telecommunications company store here.

He said the main reason of the protest was because he wanted to defend the right of the customers who should be protected by the relevant parties.

It is understood that some family members and friends of Voon had personal details of their credit cards stolen by the third party through a SMS scam. He protested by throwing eggs at the front of the store. “After the protest, I was brought to the Bintulu police station for questioning.

However, the police later let me go after the questioning on the same day.

“They advised me not to do this kind of protest ever again and I had agreed to do so,” Voon added.

“However he said on March 16, the police suddenly arrested him under the Sedition Act Section 505 (c) and also the Multimedia and Communication Act 1998 (Section 233).

“They ( police) seized my cell phone with my SIM card and the memory card as well, without going through the correct procedures,” claimed Voon.
