Jalan Bernama an honour and recognition for Bernama — Lee

-

KUALA LUMPUR: The change of name from Jalan 1/65A off Jalan Tun Razak here to Jalan Bernama is an honour and recognition for the Malaysian National News Agency ( Bernama) which has been operating from the area for the past three decades, said social activist Tan Sri Lee Lam Thye yesterday.

He said this was timely proof that the contribution of the agency in disseminating news and information to the public was highly appreciated.

Wisma Bernama was the first high-rise building along Jalan 1/65A from where the agency had been operating since 1984.

“The name Jalan 1/65A has no significance, while the new name has a lot of meaning as Bernama is the respected and trusted national news agency which has been providing local and foreign news for the past 51 years,” he said after his visit to Wisma Bernama here.

Lee said Bernama had also produced many personalities in various fields, including professors and ministers.

“I myself have many sweet memories of dealing with Bernama when I was serving as a people’s representative before becoming a social activist involved in various non- governmental bodies and government agencies,” he said.

The name of the road was officially changed on May 22 from Jalan 1/65A to Jalan Bernama and from Jalan 2/65A to Lorong Bernama.

Bernama chairman Datuk Seri Azman Ujang proposed for the name change in his speech at the Bernama’s 50th Anniversary Celebrations last year.

The proposal was approved by the then Minister of Federal Territories Datuk Seri Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor and the name change was made by the Kuala Lumpur City Hall.

Bernama was established by an Act of Parliament in 1967 and began operations as a news agency on May 20, 1968. — Bernama
