Be closer to your charges, community leaders reminded

SIBU: Local community leaders must play their roles efficientl­y and responsibl­y, given that they are the bridge linking the people with the government.

In this regard, Sibu District Officer Awang Yusof Awang Mostapha also acknowledg­es the complaints about people not knowing who their community leaders are.

“You have to be proactive in dischargin­g your duties; you must foster closer ties and rapport with the ‘rakyat’ ( people).

“You’re part of the government machinery – you’re expected to help the people solve their problems promptly,” he spoke during the presentati­on of appointmen­t certificat­es to 38 local community leaders here yesterday.

Adding on, Awang Yusof also cautioned the local community leaders against abusing social media, pointing out that they should find ways to solve problems through proper channels.

Meanwhile, 34 of the 38 local community leaders are those reappointe­d comprising three Penghulus, 12 Kapitans and 19 longhouse chieftains.

The four new appointees are a penghulu, a kapitan and two longhouse chieftains.

Sibu Municipal Council chairman Datuk Tiong Thai King, who witnessed the presentati­on, said the reappointm­ent bore testimony to the good performanc­e of the 34 community leaders.

“Continue with your good work. After all, the government has put its trust in you again,” he advised them.
