KUCHING: Members of Sri Muara Fishermen Association have conveyed their gratitude to the new government under Pakatan Harapan (PH) coalition for continuing the cost of living allowance (COLA) for fishermen.

According to association’s chairman Jam Hajimi, the allowance is a much-needed aid for all fishermen in the state and the decision by the federal government to continue giving this COLA is good news for members of the association.

“We’re wondering whether the new federal government would continue to give us this allowance as it is very important for us,” he said in a statement sent via WhatsApp yesterday.

Adding on, Jam also expressed his hope that the new federal government under the leadership of Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad would continue to take good care of the fishermen in the state and their welfare.

He also conveyed the association’s support and appreciation to the state government under the administration of Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg as well.

On May 30, Minister of Agriculture and Agro-based Industry Salahuddin Ayub announced that the government would continue to give COLA for marine and inshore fishermen in the country.

At present, Zone A fishermen enjoy an allowance of RM300 a month, while those under Zone B, C and C2 enjoy RM250 a month.
