4 family members killed, 2 seriously injured in road crash

MARAN: A family outing to Kuala Lumpur and Genting Highlands turned into tragedy when four of them were killed while two were seriously injured in an accident at KM161 on the East Coast Highway 1 ( LPT1) at about 8.30am yesterday.

Maran district police chief DSP Norzamri Abd Rahman said the accident occurred near the Maran Rest and Service ( R & R) area and the dead were Azian Abdullah, 50, and her children, Fatin Najwa Mazlan, 27, Fatin Nur Adriana, 15, and Mohamad Danish Najmi, 10.

Azian’s two other children, Mohd Shahrul Ikhram Mazlan, 20, and Fatin Nur Athirah, 19, were seriously injured and sent to the Sultan Haji Ahmad Shah Hospital, Temerloh, he said.

“Initial investigat­ions revealed that the car driven by Mohd Shahrul Ikhram skidded and crashed into a guardrail on the left.

“The four suffered fatal head and body injuries. Their bodies were sent to the Jengka Hospital for post-mortems,” he told reporters here.

Norzambri said the family was on their way home to Cheneh in Kemaman, Terengganu when the accident happened.

Meanwhile, Pahang Fire and Rescue Department deputy director Mohd Sani Harul said the department received an emergency call at 8.49am and upon arrival at the scene, all the victims were still trapped in their car.

“Rescuers took about an hour to bring out all the victims,” he said when contacted.

The rescue operation was also assisted by four Maran Health Clinic staff members and three personnel from Maran District Police headquarte­rs, he said.
