KUCHING: The Boyan- GersikSourabaya Waterfront is set to undergo facelift soon – a move meant to boost its tourism potential.

According to Assistant Minister of Rural Electricity Dr Abdul Rahman Junaidi, RM250,000 from the Rural Transformation Programme (RTP) fund for Pantai Damai state constituency would be allocated for this purpose, following the discussion with Kuching City North Commission ( DBKU).

“The fund will be used to brighten up the waterfront at night and also to add to its tourism value. We want people to come and spend leisurely time here,” Dr Abdul Rahman, who is Pantai Damai assemblyman, told reporters during the presentation of ‘bubur lambuk’ to the public at the waterfront yesterday.

Adding on, he observed that the Boyan-Gersik-Sourabaya area had undergone quite a transformation over the past 10 years – thanks to DBKU.

“Now, everyone who visits Kuching will make it a point to visit this area, which house various cottage industries – we want this to continue,” he added.

Meanwhile, Kuching North Datuk Bandar Datuk Abang Abdul Wahap Abang Julai said DBKU is in process of gazetting 350 eateries under its jurisdiction to be smoking-free areas.

“By next year, these eateries will become non- smoking zone – those caught smoking will face compounds,” he said.

Dr Abdul Rahman and his wife Siri Shorgayah Zaiden joined other guests in distributing ‘bubur lambuk’ – a thick, hearty and savoury traditional rice porridge – to single mothers, senior citizens and poor families, all of whom also received Hari Raya goodies.

The programme was jointly run by the Boyan- Gersik- Sourabaya Neighbourhood CommitteeS, Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu ( PBB) Pantai Damai branch and DBKU.
