SIBU: The Hari Raya Aidilfitri arch at Dataran Tun Datuk Patinggi Tuanku Haji Bujang bin Tuanku Osman (formerly Sibu Town Square Phase 1) is catching the eye of pedestrians and motorists passing by the area.

Assistant Minister of Education and Technological Research Dr Annuar Rapaee told The Borneo Post yesterday that the arch which was erected by the local Muslim community helps to enhance the festive mood here.

Dr Annuar who is also the assemblyman for Nangka here hopes to see more voluntary bodies participate in putting up the arch in future.

“We would like to get the nongovernmental organisations ( NGOs) to participate – even the non-Muslim community – to create lively Hari Raya Aidilfitri ambience here next year.

“In that way, it becomes part of Sibu’s tourist attractions,” he enthused.

He added that the arch would be removed one month after Hari Raya Aidilfitri.

Dataran Tun Datuk Patinggi Tuanku Haji Bujang Bin Tuanku Osman is a popular spot for community activities.

Just last weekend, some 6,000 people converged there for the mass breaking-of-fast.

During the month of Ramadan, a sizeable number of people were spotted breaking their fast there. The 173- stall Ramadan bazaar offering a wide variety of local delicacies and drinks is located just a stone’s throw away.
