Voon: Thomas’ appointment as AG a confidence booster

-

KUCHING: The appointment of Tommy Thomas as the new Attorney- General (AG) will help to revive confidence among the people in the management of justice, says PKR national vice women chief Voon Siak Ni.

“I believe the appointment of Thomas will help to revive what little confidence is left with the people in the management of justice for the cause of the people.

“The dismissal of Apandi ( Tan Sri Mohamed Apandi Ali) and the appointment of Thomas as the new AG by Pakatan Harapan government is proof of the government’s political will to institute serious reforms in the country,” she told a press conference at PKR Stampin service centre here yesterday.

Voon said Thomas, as the nation’s leading barrister and a highly respected legal figure with unchallenged integrity and credibility, is the best person for the job.

“We cannot deny that differing opinions is an inevitable circumstances in a multi-racial and multi-religious country on the choice of leaders, but with the confirmation of the appointment of the new AG today (yesterday), it is sending a clear message to the people that our new government is committed to upholding the highest order of justice and integrity for the people.

“It (the appointment) also sends an important message that the new government is adamant and firm in their promises to the people to reform the nation’s institutions,” said Voon, who is also PH national women chief for Sarawak affairs.

She added that the people were not convinced that there was still justice in the country, where high profile cases involving the people’s freedom and lives, were not properly handled.

She cited the many deaths in police custody, the murder of Altantuya, the mysterious death of Teoh Beng Hock, and the murder of land rights activist Bill Kayong, among others, as cases not properly handled.
