Ministry assures enough essential goods for Hari Raya

KUCHING: There is sufficient supply of rice, sugar, cooking oil and other essential goods in Sarawak for the upcoming Hari Raya Aidilfitri celebratio­n.

Ministry of Domestic Trade, Cooperativ­es and Consumeris­m ( KPDNKK) Sarawak director Dato Stanley Tan assured that the ministry has conducted checks to ensure there was adequate supply of such goods to meet demand.

“In the event that there is a shortage of supplies, we will try our best to obtain them from available resources,” he told reporters when met during ‘Ops Catut 4.0 – Change GST Rate from Six Per Cent to Zero Per Cent’ at Everrise in Vivacity Megamall, here yesterday.

Tan also noted that KPDNKK Sarawak enforcemen­t officers will continue to monitor and conduct inspection­s to ensure that items being sold are not manipulate­d.

He said thus far, 22,834 premises throughout Sarawak have been inspected of which 19,751 involved premises in the city and the remaining 3,083 premises, in rural areas.

“The inspection­s were carried out by all nine KPDNKK branches in the state and involved a total of 200 enforcemen­t officers.”

He revealed that KPDNKK had taken action against 183 premises with a total seizure worth RM324,000 and compound value of RM20,000.

“The offences committed by the traders were under the Price Control and Anti-Profiteeri­ng Act 2011, Supply Control Act 1961, Trade Descriptio­ns Act 2011, Weights and Measures Act 1972 and Consumer Protection Act 1999.”

Earlier, Tan led officers from KPDNKK Sarawak and Royal Malaysian Customs Department to conduct price checks on goods sold at Everrise Vivacity to ensure compliance following the zerorating of the Goods and Services Tax (GST).

Also present were KPDNKK Sarawak deputy director Md Nawawi Abdul Rahman, Customs GST Enforcemen­t Division assistant director Spree Awang Morshidi and Everrise Vivacity branch manager Jessie Hee.
