‘Feast of Corpus Christi’ celebrated with special mass, procession
MIRI: Catholics here celebrated the ‘ Feast of Corpus Christi’ recently in honour of the ‘ Body and Blood of Jesus Christ’ with a special mass at St Joseph’s Cathedral, followed by a procession.
Parishioners turned up in the hundreds, despite the Gawai Dayak holidays.
Monsignor Francis Kulleh led the ceremony.
Later, celebrants took part in the candlelight procession, singing hymns and prayers along the halfkilometre route that began from and ended at the cathedral along Angsana Road here, passing Wisma Pelita Tunku and Miri Visitors Information Centre along the way.
The Eucharist, known as the ‘ Blessed Sacrament’ kept inside a specially designed chalice, was placed on board a decorated lorry that was part of the procession.
Upon reaching back to the cathedral, Francis held the chalice aloft before bringing it to the altar inside the building, where he was joined by parishioners for ‘ The Benediction’.
Earlier in his homily, Francis called upon the congregation to remain steadfast in their belief, always allocate time for worship and join the Holy Sacrament in the Church of God.
He said Corpus Christi was established to focus on the ‘ Holy Eucharist’, being the ‘ body and blood of Jesus Christ – the gift and spiritual food given to all concerned so as to sustain all believers as they journey through life’.
