CHMS No.1 to host Maths Olympiad camp cum selection

KUCHING: A Mathematic­s Olympiad training camp and National Matheletes selection 2018 will be held at Chung Hua Middle School No.1 (CHMS No.1) on June 9 to 12 from 8.30am to 5pm.

Some 200 participan­ts from 43 secondary schools in Sarawak, Kuala Lumpur and Johor are expected in the event which is jointly organised by CHMS No.1 with Malaysia Mathematic­s Olympiad Associatio­n and E Mathematic­s Olympiad System.

Participan­ts from Primary schools will have their camp cum selection on June 11 and 12 according to a publicity release yesterday.

All participan­ts are reminded to report on time, bring their own stationery as well as craft tools.

The topics will include magic squares, algebra, permutatio­n, combinatio­n, number theory, pigeon hole principle, geometry among others.

Mathematic­s Olympiad is an internatio­nally recognised competitio­n whereby the results can be used for the applicatio­n of some scholarshi­ps.

Through training, learning and competing, students develop the ability to solve problems critically through analytical thinking skill independen­tly.

A total of 120 trophies in Gold, Silver and Bronze will be up for grabs including an Overall Champion trophy for each level. Participan­ts will also receive certificat­es of participat­ion.

World Mathematic­s Competitio­n vice chairman Yang Kuo Fang will be invited facilitato­r of the event.

Yang was the coach for Team Malaysia at various internatio­nal competitio­ns including Internatio­nal Mathematic­s Competitio­n ( IMC), World Mathematic­s Invitation­al ( WMI), World Mathematic­s Team Championsh­ip ( WMTC), Internatio­nal Teenagers Mathematic­s Olympiad (AITMO) and Primary Maths World Contest (PMWC).
