BAM not sending Category B shuttlers to Asian Games

KUAL A LUMPU R: The Badminton Associat ion of Malaysia ( BAM) has decided only category A players will be eligible to compete in the 2018 Asian Games in Indonesia from Aug 18 to Sept 2.

BAM president Datuk Seri Mohamad Norza Zakaria said the decision of the sport governing body in not sending category B players to the Asian Games as it was not a platform for exposure and the sport has a very high standard in Asia.

“The Olympic Counci l of Malaysia ( OCM) has approved 10 men players and four women players with four coaches and a manager under category A. BAM will appeal for six more players under category B to be incorporat­ed in category A including two more coaches.

“If the appeal is rejected, BAM wi l l not send players under category B as OCM’s category A guide is only for the top four players in Asia.

The players selected have the potential to win medals,” he told reporters after chairing the Coaching and Training Committee ( C& T) meeting at Academy Badminton Malaysia (ABM) in Bukit Kiara here yesterday.

The list of players approved by OCM under category A are Datuk Lee Chong Wei, Lee Zii Jia, Iskandar Zulkarnain Zainuddin, Leong Jun Hao (men’s singles), Tan Wee Kiong-Goh V Shem, Teo Ee YiOng Yew Sin (men’s doubles), Chan Peng Soon-Goh Liu Ying, Goh Soon Huat- Shevon Lai, (mixed double) ,Chow Mei Kuan-Lee Meng Yean (women’s doubles).

The BAM category B players proposed to OCM included Soniia Cheah, Goh Jin Wei, Lee Ying Ying, S.Kisona and one more women’s doubles pair. — Bernama
