UTP advances 80 places in QS world university rankings
KUALA LUMPUR: Universiti Teknologi Petronas ( UTP) has achieved a better position in the 2019 Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) World University Rankings by climbing 80 spots into the 521- 530 rank range from an earlier placing in the 601- 650 range.
Through this accomplishment, UTP has been placed in the top two per cent of universities in the world.
UTP has been consistently ranked in the QS and Times Higher Education (THE) rankings which are the top recognised university rankings in the world.
In a statement yesterday, UTP also said it is the first and only private Malaysian university to be given a maximum five-star overall rating in the QS Stars University Rating System.
UTP is now ranked 145th, up 88 spots from its 233rd placing in the 2018 QS World University Rankings by Broad Subject of Engineering and Technology.
The university was ranked in four subjects: Chemical Engineering ranked top 150, Mechanical Engineering ranked top 200, Electrical Engineering ranked top 250 and Computer Science and Information System ranked top 300.
Meanwhile, in the 2018 THE Emerging Economies Rankings, the university was ranked 77th from a previous placing of 91.
This places UTP among the top 100 of the best research-led universities in the developing world, and second after Universiti Malaya for Malaysia.
UTP vice- chancellor, Prof Dr Mohamed Ibrahim Mutalib said: “We attribute this achievement to the Transformation Plan which has transformed UTP into a research-led university with world- class research capability. Therefore, our performance has been consistently reflected in our rankings and ratings.” This year, QS evaluated 4,763 institutions from 151 countries.
The institutions were ranked based on academic reputation, employer reputation, faculty/ student ratio, citations per faculty, international faculty ratio and international student ratio. — Bernama
