MIRI: The Miri City Council (MCC) plans to set up more WhatsApp chat groups for residents committees (RCs).

According to mayor Adam Yii, the plan is set to improve council services as well as enhance safety and security of residential areas.

It is said that MCC has set up WhatsApp groups for the RCs in Pujut Krokop, Permyjaya, Vista Perdana, Senadin, Taman Tunku, Tudan Lutong and Piasau – all totalling 3,000 registered members.

“The latest registration for the WhatsApp group would be for Riam RC this Sunday (June 10), from 10am to 6pm at Riam Emart.

“I hope the folk in Riam would come and support this registration exercise,” he told reporters during MCC’s ‘Meet the People’ session at the Urban Transformation Centre (UTC) Miri yesterday.

On RCs, Yii viewed them as an effective programme to maintain peace and order at residential areas.

“The RC programme is a community unit under MCC that serves as its eyes and ears, allowing the council to improve its services.

“There is no political agenda behind the setting up of RCs – it is a new working concept adopted by MCC in 2009.

“Its establishment is aimed at fostering a closer relationship with the community, understanding their needs and expectations, as well as providing satisfactory services to the people,” said the mayor, adding that the RC programme has proven successful in bringing people to work together under a common objective – that is to make each residential area the ‘best place for living’.

Yii also said for the operation of the RCs, the areas under the MCC jurisdiction have been divided into 15 zones – a group of councillors is in charge of each zone.

On the ‘Meet the People’ session, he said the MCC received a total of seven issues conveyed by the public – two cases pertaining to the council’s engineering department, two on parking matters, a request for tree cutting, a complaint about refuse collection and another about public nuisance, specifically loud noises, at the Ming Café area.
