Routine checks on fire hydrants to ensure they work — Bomba

-

SIBU: Twice yearly checks are carried out on fire hydrants to ensure they are in good working condition especially during emergencies, Sibu Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) Sungei Merah officer Misran Bisara said.

He said as the department would not compromise on people’s safety, constant checking on these fire hydrants is necessary.

Misran gave this assurance when responding to queries from Sibu MP Oscar Ling during a dialogue held here recently.

Ling wanted to know the latest development on the issue of fire hydrants as there were reports alleging that some could not be used during emergencies.

On fire hydrants that were found buried under the road, Misran said this situation came about due to road sinking problems.

“When the roads are upgraded or raised, these fire hydrants will be buried under the road. We are aware of such problems and are working on ways to resolve the situation,” he added.

On a separate matter, Misran reminded cooking gas cylinder dealers that they are only allowed to have no more than nine gas cylinders in their shop at any one time.

He said this was to ensure the safety of the shops in the event of any unfortunate incident occurring.

“Action will be taken against those who violated the law,” he added.

Misran also reminded shopowners not to extend the awnings unless they get prior approval from the relevant authorities.

He cited cases of several shophouse owners who made extension to the awning right into the middle of the road.

“This is not allowed as it will be an impediment to the firefighting effort. When there is a fire, the awning could block fire-engines from entering the fire zone, hence wasting the most vital moments of the firefighters to do rescue works,” he explained.

For buildings where elevators are to be installed, Misran said the owners must apply to carry out the installation from them.

After the completion of the installation, he said the elevators will be handed over to the building owner and thereafter, any inspections, repair or maintenance works are the responsibilities of the owners.
