Perry and Tarra crowned Kuching weightlift­ing champions

KUCHING: Perry Law and Tarra Azahari Yeo were crowned the Men’s Open and Women’s Open champions of the Kuching Amateur Weightlift­ing Open at CrossFit Kuching along Jalan Chawan yesterday.

Kian Yew Chai and Josephine See finished second in the Men’s open and Women’s open section respective­ly.

In third and fourth positions in the Men’s Open were Gordon Chung and Petrus Isaac Stanley while the third and fourth finishers in the Women’s Open were Helen Then and Nurin Aida respective­ly.

Meanwhile, in the Sukma Men’s category, Bapi Muyat out did eight others to lift the title, followed by Jerry Gawan, Hong, Wyncles Kiring, Jeremiah Paren, Johnny Carl Tidot, Anthony Jilang and Tian Chen Liew.

The winner of the Sukma Women’s category was Marthini Chan, followed by her sister Marthina and teammate Cheerlyn Upang.

Sarawak Sports Corporatio­n (SSC) chief executive officer Dr Ong Kong Swee gave away the prizes and closed the event.

According to organising chairman Arthur Wee, who is also the president of the Kuching Weightlift­ing Associatio­n, the competitio­n was aimed at promoting the sport among the amateurs and it was also part of the programme that CrossFit Kuching are working with MSNS to train the Sukma lifters and give them exposure.

“This is the fourth event that we are doing here but this is the first time that it is open to the public while the former three competitio­ns were for members. We hope to turn it into an internatio­nal affair in the future,” he added.

On a bright note, Wee said Sukma lifter Jerry Gawan snatched 145kg, which was an unofficial Sukma record, thus making him a gold medal potential for Sukma Perak this September.
