Start right with Heriot-Watt
RAUDZAH Hannani Fadzli was one of the first batch of students who were part of Heriot-Watt University Malaysia’s Foundation programme, along with Danial Lum Shi Haur, who went on to pursue the university’s Bachelor (Hons) Business Administration.
“I am passionate about and constantly seeking opportunities in the oil and gas industry,” said Raudzah, a third-year BEng (Hons) Petroleum Engineering student at Heriot-Watt University Malaysia.
“The knowledge and experience I’ve gained will definitely bolster my dream career as a petroleum engineer.”
“I still remember my first impression of the university four years ago. It was a breath of fresh air compared to the other educational institutions that I had visited,” said Danial.
When asked if he thought that the university helped him develop links with the industry, he answered, “Yes, yes, yes and yes. Through this degree, I have many chances to link myself to the working world both theoretically as well as practically. Lecturers will always try their best to expose us to what is happening out there in the real world; there are many guest speakers from multiple industries visiting us throughout the year to ensure we have a good amount of exposure to the industry though we are still in the university.
“From what I can see, the university definitely opens up a great deal of possibilities for fresh graduates to step into the working world.”
Through Heriot-Watt’s Foundation programme, both Raudzah and Danial have gone on to successfully complete their undergraduate studies and will be graduating this year.
Heriot-Watt lives up to its legacy of educational excellence by working closely with industry professionals to develop and accredit its curricula.
According to Heriot-Watt University Malaysia’s Head of Malaysia Foundation Programmes, Associate Professor Dr Jasmine Low, “Enrolling in a Heriot-Watt University Malaysia Foundation programme enables students to experience a UKbenchmarked curriculum and UK style of learning and teaching from the start of their studies.
“Students are given early exposure to independent learning and problem-based learning and teaching methods with strong emphasis on English literacy as well as problem-solving and critical thinking skills. These skills help to prepare them to cope with the rigours of undergraduate studies while providing a good start in their overall development to be successful and employable graduates in the future,” she said.
Heriot-Watt’s foundation programme has seen students such as Danial and Raudzah climb to greater heights in their studies and careers.
The university has gained a solid reputation as a provider of premier education and knowledge transfer with known works in practical, leading-edge research.
It is ranked 41st amongst universities in the world for its international outlook by the Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2018. The university was also recently dubbed the International University of the Year by The Times and Sunday Times Good University Guide 2018.
