Manipal – A legacy of professionalism

-

IN its two decades in Malaysia, Melaka-Manipal has thrived and remained at top echelons of medical education and rightfully earning its moniker as THE medical school to go to.

Melaka-Manipal Medical College is a branch campus, Manipal Academy of Higher Education (MAHE), simply known as Manipal.

Manipal’s founder, Dr T M A Pai, considered the twin pillars of a vigorous society to be Health and Education, and since the launching of the first private medical institution in India way back in 1953, the iconic Kasturba Medical College, Manipal has been on an incredible journey of excellence in education and healthcare.

Scores of Malaysians made a beeline to Manipal to avail high quality medical education since the 1960s, so much that it is believed that one in every 5 to 6 doctors in Malaysia is a Manipal alumnus.

It was on the back of the well earned reputation that the Manipal group was invited to set up a medical school in Malaysia and Melaka-Manipal has not looked back since its inception in 1997.

Specializing in medical education, Melaka-Manipal offers the MBBS and Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS).

It also runs a Foundation in Science (FIS) program whereby school leavers undertake a year’s pre-university studies and given a groundwork of medical subjects that they will encounter in their degree studies.

Manipal has, too, a fully-fledged Malaysian university in the Manipal International University, Nilai, Negeri Sembilan which offers Engineering, Business and Science degrees, postgraduate degree, diplomas and Foundation courses.

Melaka-Manipal’sMBBS and BDS programmes are intentionally designed to couple the highly reputed Indian medical education with intense training in Malaysia.

Therefore students complete their pre-clinical studies, which includes Anatomy sessions with human cadavers, over a 2 ½ years and then hone their clinical skills in Malaysian hospitals such as Melaka and General Hospitals.

This slant towards hands-on training is spread right across the medical and dentistry programs, which graduates find exceptionally advantageous when they commence practice in real life.

Melaka-Manipal’s campuses in India and Malaysia are purpose built to provide ambient environments for undisturbed study balanced with avenues for recreation to let off steam.

Accommodation in Manipal India is considered to be near-5 Star hotel level, with 24 hour security and livein Wardens. Lecture halls are a mere two minute walk away, the library and food outlets just a stone’s throw from the hostels.

Nestled within the tranquil surroundings, MMMC campuses in Melaka and Muar are no less compared to Manipal. Both are ideally situated close to town, and is a shining example of what modern campuses need to be, balancing excellent academic facilities with equally important recreational facilities for students and staff.

All three campuses have advanced classrooms and laboratories sharing space with a football field, a fully equipped sports hall and gymnasium, swimming pool and even a zen room for relaxation and recharging.

With enrolments for the next intake in October for the MBBS and the BDs are now on, and for the FIS for the July intake, students are strongly encouraged to apply early to avoid the disappointment of missing out on high quality medical education at an iconic medical school that was accorded a Superbrand in medical education in 2011.

Students may apply with provisional/AS results to ‘book’ their places for the programs of their interest as time nears the intake dates.

Provisional offers will be given, with full and final offers issued once final pre-University results are received with the minimum entry requirements if fulfilled.

Upto 100 per cent scholarships are available for the FIS, and MBBS students have the full tilt of RM150, 000 PTPTN loan available for those who may feel finance may be a constraint.
