KUCHING: Sarawak should continue to retain its unique characteristic of coming together to help the needy regardless of race and religion, said Welfare, Community Wellbeing, Women, Family and Childhood Development Minister Dato Sri Fatimah Abdullah.

“In Sarawak, many nongovernmental organisations, associations and bodies give aid regardless of race and religion, especially during festive seasons,” she said at the Hari Raya Gifts presentation at Sarawak Hun Nam Siang T’ng yesterday.

“It is important to retain this spirit of giving as we live in a state, country with many races and religions, and we can live in peace and harmony - no fighting among the races, respect one another.”

Thus, she congratulated Sarawak Hun Nam Siang T’ng for continuously giving charity and helping the underprivileged for 61 years, regardless of race and religion.

She said that Sarawak Hun Nam Siang T’ng also helps to take care of old folks who have no relatives and gives out medical expenses and monthly food relief to the needy besides providing funeral assistance.

“As Muslims, in this holy month we are very much encouraged to do charity. Anyone can do, even the poor. In Islam, the most simple one is to smile - smile to everyone you meet. A smile can brighten your face, bring a lot of cheer and make this world a better place,” she said.

She added that this was her third time gracing this type of event at Sarawak Hun Nam Siang T’ng, and was amazed at the changes and improvements at the old folks’ home, and the only thing that remained unchanged was their wish to help the needy.

Towards this end, she said the state government would assist Sarawak Hun Nam Siang T’ng so that it could continue carrying out its mission in helping people.

Earlier, Sarawak Hun Nam Siang T’ng chairman Tay Boon Sin thanked the many donors from various backgrounds, races and religions who came forward to contribute to the event.

As a non-profit body, Sarawak Hun Nam Siang T’ng needs the support from the state government and community, he added.

“We are very pleased with this because more and more people from all races are joining in these projects. I think the development of this aspect is very meaningful because not only the community show their love, the people are very willing to sacrifice their own time and money to contribute to the society. This manifestation of love shows that we are not only taking care of ourselves, but are also willing to take care of the unfortunate people.

“I hope that more people in this country will cultivate the spirit of dedication to create a more caring society,” said Tay.

Sarawak Hun Nam Siang T’ng is giving monthly relief in terms of food and groceries to 360 families in Sarawak.

For the event yesterday, 92 Muslims received food baskets containing beef, chicken, chicken eggs, potatoes and dry food so that they can celebrate the Hari Raya Aidilfitri this Friday. They were also given RM50 in cash each. The food basket costs almost RM400 each.
