‘Avengers: Infinity War’ soars past RM8 billion globally

LOS ANGELES: Disney-Marvel Studios’ “Avengers: Infi nity War” has surpassed the US$ 2 billion ( RM8 billion) mark at the global box office in 48 days.

The superhero blockbuste­r joins three other fi lms that have crossed the milestone — “Avatar” ( US$ 2.79 billion), “Titanic” ( US$ 2.19 billion), and “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” ( US$ 2.07 billion).

In the US, “Avengers: Infi nity War” is the fi fth-highest grossing pic of all time, with US$ 656.1 million through June 11. It holds the record for biggest US debut ever with US$ 257.7 million in its opening weekend from Apr 27 to Apr 29, topping “The Force Awakens” by nearly US$ 10 million.

Internatio­nally, it is the third-highest grossing release ever with US$ 1.346 billion, and its combined domestic and internatio­nal debuts set a record of US$ 640.5 million. The movie opened to an impressive US$ 199.3 million in China two weeks after its global debut and went on to become the thirdbigge­st release ever in the country, with US$ 369.7 million to date.

“Avengers: Infi nity War” became the fastest fi lm to hit the US$ 1 billion worldwide mark, needing only 11 days to do so. It reached the milestone one day earlier than “Star Wars: The Force Awakens.”

The movie, directed by Anthony and Joe Russo, features a massive ensemble cast that includes Robert Downey Jr., Chris Hemsworth, Mark Ruffalo, Chris Evans, Scarlett Johansson, Benedict Cumberbatc­h, Don Cheadle, Tom Holland, Chadwick Boseman, Paul Bettany, Elizabeth Olsen, Anthony Mackie, Sebastian Stan, Danai Gurira, Letitia Wright, Dave Bautista, Zoe Saldana, Josh Brolin, and Chris Pratt.
