54 teams and counting for 52nd Unity Cup

KUCHING: Fifty-four teams have signed up for Samarahan’s iconic football competitio­n - the 52nd Unity Cup - vying for the Datuk Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah challenge trophy at Kampung Sambir football field from June 17 to July 1.

Event organiser Kelab Bola Sepak Sambir Bistari ( KBSB) are targeting the participat­ion of 60 teams and closing date for submission entries is June 16.

“Defending champion Kampung Empila have also confirmed their participat­ion this year and we have received entries from teams from Asajaya, Sadong Jaya, Simunjan, Samarahan and Kuching,” said KBSB secretary Khaimi Dan.

“The competitio­n is based on a knock out format and you need to win all your matches to reach the final,” he said after witnessing the sponsorshi­p hand over by Lea Sports Centre to the club at Wisma Hopoh Shopping Complex yesterday.

According to him, it is an important platform to produce more talented players in Sarawak and plays a very significan­t role in the developmen­t of junior players in the state especially in Kota Samarahan.

Minister of Tourism, Arts, Culture, Youth and Sports Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah, who is also Asajaya assemblyma­n, will officiate the closing on July 1.

For this edition, the champions stand to receive RM5,0 0 0, challenge trophy, trophy, medals and a set of jerseys each.

The runners- up shal l get RM3,000, trophy, medals and jerseys while the losing semifinali­sts will each get RM1,500, trophy and medals.

The tournament’s top scorer and Man of the Match in the fi nal shall also receive prizes in the form of goods vouchers from Lea Sports Centre.
