All 19 schools in Selangau obtain diesel supply

-

SIBU: Diesel has been supplied to all 19 schools in Selangau including SK Sungai Arau to power up their generator sets for electricity supply.

In revealing this to The Borneo Post yesterday, Tamin assemblyman Christopher Gira said that he had received confirmation from Selangau District education officer Walter Naing that this will enable the schools to run as usual when lessons resume today after the midterm holidays ended yesterday.

“So, there is no issue of shortage of diesel in Selangau,” he pointed out.

Gira said 13 of the 19 schools are located very close to Sarawak Energy Berhad’s ( SEB) power grid.

“I have raised in the last State Legislative Assembly ( DUN) sitting for any school near the power grid to be connected with electricity from the power grid.

“State Education, Science and Technological Research Minister ( Dato Sri Michael Manyin) has replied during the DUN sitting that all the schools near the power grid line (are) to be connected with electricity from the power grid. No more dependent on genset for electricity supply,” he said when asked on the long-term measure for schools in Selangau relying on genset for power supply.

In this regard, Gira expressed his fervent hope for these schools to be connected with 24-hour electricity supply from the power grid soon as a long-term measure to prevent classes from being interrupted whenever there is a problem with diesel supply.

On June 15, it was reported that more than 40 primary and secondary schools here and in Limbang Division were hit by diesel shortage – some for more than 10 days – as the appointed contractor had fallen behind in stocking up fuel tanks.
